Gold Gains as US Markets Show Lower Expectations for Fed Rate Hikes

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Wednesday, gold prices advanced during Asian trading hours, driven by a decline in U.S. Treasury yields and a shift in trader sentiment regarding an interest-rate hike in September. The spot gold price increased by 0.2%, reaching $4,342.33 an ounce at 0030 GMT after experiencing a significant drop in the previous session. Meanwhile, December U.S. gold futures decreased 0.6% to $4,396.30. The outlook for Federal Reserve policy remained a key focus among precious metals traders ahead of the release of the July meeting minutes.

Gold prices gain as Fed rate hike bets ease in US markets
Gold prices remain sensitive to U.S. yields and September rate expectations.

Gold declined 1.1% to $4,364.90 an ounce late Tuesday following two days of gains. December futures closed 1.2% lower at $4,420.60. The downturn coincided with rising long-term bond yields across major markets. The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.3371%, its highest point in nearly two decades, before easing to approximately 5.28% during Asian trading hours. Elevated yields tend to diminish demand for gold because it does not provide interest or regular income.

Market expectations for a rate increase at the Fed’s September meeting have diminished. According to CME FedWatch data, there is a 65% chance that policymakers will keep interest rates steady. Conversely, the probability of a quarter-point hike stands at 35%. Recent economic reports from the U.S. also indicated employment declines, softer inflation figures, and weaker retail sales in July. These data points are influencing the market’s assessment of future policy moves as investors monitor inflation, employment conditions, and borrowing costs.

Federal Reserve Minutes Highlight Policy Divisions

The Federal Reserve held its benchmark federal funds rate at a target range of 3.50% to 3.75% on July 29. The decision was supported by a 9-3 vote, with three officials advocating for a quarter-point increase, underscoring divisions within the rate-setting committee. The central bank noted that economic activity continued to grow at a solid pace while inflation remained above its 2% target. It also mentioned that employment conditions remained broadly stable, with job gains keeping pace with labor force expansion.

The minutes from the July meeting are set to be published at 1800 GMT on Wednesday. They will offer a comprehensive account of the discussions behind the latest rate decision. The upcoming policy meeting is scheduled from Sept. 15 to Sept. 16. Investors are paying close attention to the balance between inflationary pressures and signs of economic slowdown. Treasury yields continue to play a critical role in gold trading, as shifts in borrowing costs can quickly impact demand for non-yielding assets like gold.

Precious Metals Experience Divergent Trading Patterns Post-Volatility

Other precious metals showed mixed results in early Wednesday trading. Silver fell 0.5% to $62.99 an ounce, while platinum increased 0.3% to $1,717.03. Palladium declined 0.3% to $1,286.73. These movements followed a volatile session across commodities and fixed-income markets. Gold’s slight rebound only partially offset Tuesday’s decline, with elevated bond yields continuing to influence investor positioning across metals and other assets sensitive to interest rates.

As August begins, gold remains relatively steady after a stable July, with investment demand visible through exchange-traded products. According to the World Gold Council, global gold ETFs recorded net inflows of $3 billion in July. Total holdings rose by 23 metric tons to 4,068 tons, and assets under management increased 1% to $530 billion. Gold prices continue to be closely linked to U.S. interest-rate expectations, Treasury yields, inflation data, and the timing of future monetary policy decisions.
